CrisThere are VNs that are generic life sim sandboxes where you play a normal person. They’re mostly porn though.

Less mockingly, I also appreciated tank dating simulator. It’s not a porn game but makes fun of them, all the “girls” are actually historical tanks and their friends/enemies as well as features/issues are historically accurate as best as I could tell. For example the French girl/tank keeps running into people(yes literally running into them) because the French tank she is modeled after had many issues with it braking system.
I think corporate uses these for training
ApyteleLow key though maybe there should be an open source game version for basic social and life skills. Like a combo between Stardew Valley with the Sims Basic needs bars (oooh display it as Maslow’s Pyramid) but a visual novel with little minigames like you gotta turn the knob to turn the oven off before you walk away.
Social:
- how to get needs met from strangers (shopping, civic tasks)
- how to make small talk / interact with acquaintances
- how to set and keep boundaries in close personal relationships.
- intimate partner relationships
- how to move people between those relationship levels / detect which level they have you in
Life skills:
- cooking and food safety
- preparing dry pasta / rice / beans
- preventing food spoilage
- foods that need to be cooked in a specific way for safety (mostly but not exclusively meat)
- oven and microwave safety
- Cleaning
- sanitationn of food prep areas (preventing mold / house pests)
- sanitation of bedding / relaxation areas
- basic organization / separating areas by energy level and usage (keep food / nonfood areas separate)
- washer / dryer safety
- hygiene and bathing
- hand hygiene
- wash your genitals front to back (more important for women but also men).
- dental hygiene
- basic health
- basic diet (high fiber, low sugar, vitamin c, etc)
- hydration
- basic exercise types and safety (cardio, strength, flexibility)
- sleep hygiene
- basic types of illness / injury and when to see a doctor
- OTC medication usage / reading a medication label
- emotional hygiene (recognizing and naming emotions / mindfulness)
Optional DLCs for specific situations like cultural quirks and specific body stuff like hair types, sex ed (pregnancy / STD prevention is separate so the fucking puritans will still let their kids play the base game).
If people are gonna let ipads raise their kids maybe they could actually learn something, LOL. Look I’m tired of having to teach patients these things on top of their specific illnesses like diabetes OK. They just found out their body is trying to kill them it would be nice if they already knew how to wash their hands. I would love to help write this game if somebody wants to help with the backend.
MinnesotaGoddami want to disagree with you on some of this, but then again i’ve met some of my inlaws. they’ve had anxiety dreams where angels appeared to them to tell them to pay rent and that was the first time anyone mentioned it was their responsibility, explaining some evictions.

I have a pot luck party rule, which is reiterated prior to every pot luck party, that whoever brings the potato/macaroni salad takes said salad home. This was instituted after I got stuck with three full containers of potato and three full containers of macaroni salad after a party. It all went bad in the fridge after NO ONE would take any home and no one in house eats either.
The real rule is to have a signup sheet with categories where if there’s a category with the least signups the current RSVP must pick that one. The base categories for general parties are, Entree, side, dessert, and non-food supplies (cups / cutlery / plates / napkins). If you’re going low waste that last person can bring nothing and be assigned to assist with cleanup / washing the dishes.
The problem is if you make this game, people WILL roast you for your potato salad recipe.
After you open the drawer to pick up the utensils, you notice the knob getting looser than before.

Depending on their fighting skills, they could have a relatively easy time as martial arts teachers (martial art = anything fighting related). Their troubles would arise from the whole “why does society work like this?”
Back in the day of DOS and such, there were multiple ‘economic simulator’ games about the daily loop of a typical abstract worker. With the actions like ‘go to work’, ‘pay rent’, ‘go see a movie’, etc. With the management of money, hunger, and boredom, and usually with a prospect of getting a better apartment and a better-paying job. These games were very simple, but surprisingly widespread.

Kinda, but much simplified so you could run it on a glorified calculator. See e.g. ‘Dope Wars’, which was ported to actual TI-82.

Who are visual novels normally for, and why is it so funny if they’re for normal people? Genuinely have no idea.
My impression is that 99.999% of visual novels are dating simulators for teenagers. Basically the same audience as all the teenage ‘school life’/romance anime, and equally produced in bafflingly huge quantities.
I mean, there is also an entire subgenre of smutty visual novels.
I fail to see much of a difference, frankly. Perhaps only that most teenage manga/anime stop right at the boundary of smut, leaving much to the reader/viewer’s imagination, or alternatively leave a lot of people blue-balled.
I mean more that the smutty ones probably have a wider audience.
Note, however, that the genre has some outstanding games like the ‘Ace Attorney’ series, and sometimes intersects with other genres like adventure games. This dates back to the eighties, with ‘The Portopia Serial Murder Case’ and ‘Snatcher’, for example.
It’s also rather similar to the Western genre of ‘Choose Your Own Adventure’ RPG books.
