Spaghetti for owls. A juvenile Great Horned Owl is brought a Garter Snake by one of its parents. Yum!

This gave me a visceral reaction. Gross, but funny so worth it!
It is fairly gross to me too, but it really seems like a great food for them. They can’t chew, but it is a nice shape where the young owls especially won’t have to worry about choking.
Owls have some amazing anatomy to let them eat like this. They have a rough tongue like a cat, and the hole to the esophagus is in the tongue, not at the back of the throat. They also have a tongue bone to add structure to the tongue and to help it pull things along down into their stomachs.
We have almost all the same parts, though they’re built differently and sometimes placed in a different area, but that is probably why we feel ok leaving this type of snacking to them! 😅
Damn, that’s cool.
I’m continually impressed by your knowledge and dedication to these owls. Keep it up! Spoon-feed us info like meat-spaghetti through a tounge hole!
I learn new stuff all the time and explaining it to you all helps it sink in for me. I came here knowing next to nothing, and I certainly know a lot more now, but the owls keep showing me how much more they have to offer. They’re so much more than just a pretty face! 😄
Please never stop, you are amazing!
Oh hey, I haven’t seen you around since Lemmy Silver!
You all never cease to amaze me as well. I was browsing the communities page today and it looks like I have the most active community that pretty much a single person posting. I was both shocked that I still find so many great things to talk about, but even moreso that so many of you enjoy this topic so much. It really means a lot to me to see you all having so much fun while learning about owls. I know you personally have helped raise money to support wildlife care, and I hope some other people have supported their local rehabs as a result as well.
You guys hosting World have made a place which has really changed my life for the better. I’ve gotten more social and confident, and of course my interest in these birds has deepened tremendously and now I get to work up close with them. I got to interact with 3 Great Horned Owls and 2 Screech Owls just this Sunday in addition to a bunch of other animals.
I have no intention on stopping any time soon, so as long as you guys keep this platform up, I’m going to use it!
Looks like he’s handling it with oven mitts.
They do have wonderfully fuzzy feet! 🥰
