Very mildly interesting fact, some owls in English are not owls in French, mostly because of physical differences.

Owls in French are hiboux but only if they have the little pointy ears on their heads. Otherwise they are chouettes.

For example the barred owl in English is the chouette rayée in French.

Usually it's reverse, with English making a difference between turtle and tortoise while it's all tortues in French. Or between apes and monkeys while in French they are all singes. But for this one, apparently the little tufts on their heads make them owls, or not, in French.

i am now aware of owl, thank you

and owl is aware of you, too

Awesome, thanks!

Looks like it's an app issue. I just switched to my laptop and now I see these and the one in the original post.

May she have the owliest birthday ever!

...where's u/anon6789?..

Asleep. 😁

Internation Owl Center is having an event with their traditional owl themed concessions. I'd like to attend some day.

Here's to another year of us becoming even more aware of the superbness of owls!

...much love, and plenty of rest...

Ah, my rest is over. Mondays are my busy days.

Thanks to the efforts of this community (shout out to anon6789) I'm the most aware I have ever been of owls. I feel enlightened and elevated, all thanks to the owls.

Always a pleasure. Two years ago I hardly knew all that much myself, but after more than 2000 posts and 11,000 comments almost all about owls, I've picked up a bit, and it motivated me to volunteer with my local wildlife, so now I get hands on knowledge to go along with all the reading we've done together.

I'm glad we've had so much fun learning together, and hopefully some of you guys have found a deeper appreciation for the world around you.

I look forward to another year of discussing owls with all of you!

D: may I ask how you ended up leading the owl-posting? I figured it was along your line of work or something! Now I'm curious.

The whole thing is documented, right here actually!

My girlfriend was the one who originally liked owls, so in our travels we'd occasionally end up at a place with some. I was a hippo fan at the time. The owls grew on me quickly, but I didn't really know anything about them.

Reddit third party apps got killed, I was a Boost user, so I checked out what the alternative was, and came here. I saw there was a Superbowl here, and I subscribed. I don't think I'd ever posted to r/superbowl since everyone's stuff was so much fancier than any phone pics I'd taken.

After a few days, nobody seemed to be posting here though, so even though my photos were not great, it was something I could share. This community is something I knew people loved from Reddit, and I didn't want it to fizzle out.

I started sharing one of my photos a day. People seemed to sort of like them. Someone said they wished they could see owls like I did. I didn't think that was too hard, I just actively sought them out. So I kicked off the United States of Owls, where I found a rescue, preferably one open to visitation, in every state.

This really started my learning about facts and individual owls, and I saw how much work went into helping them. People really responded well to the posting, so now I was invested and interested, and so was the audience.

The rest just branches out from there. I started seeking out owls in person even harder, and I started looking for photographers for more content, and from the questions I developed and you all asked, I had to start learning. After a while I really wanted to hold an owl, so I did. Then I wanted to do it more, so now I volunteer with wild animals, including owls.

I shared the whole journey with you all, so it's all here. You can see all my owl adventures right here if you scroll far enough.

Woo huge lore drop! That's a really cool journey. thanks for your investment in this community, I remember it being one of constants when I started lurking, so I'm happy you have kept it going. :)

It was interesting to look back and see the original posts to see how I found my voice as a poster. It's still the genuine me, but I can feel how I go from a shy and reluctant lurker to seeing you guys look forward to seeing my posts and I get more relaxed and confident with you all.

Somewhat recently I was a little shocked to see a few people refer to my content as a meme, in the same breath as things like the beans posts. I can only assume they've never actually looked at my posts and saw that while I try to keep it fun, I'm here to teach. So I guess that is a testament to my presence that even those that ignore me see me as something always here.

I go through periods of burnout and thinking people are losing interest, but I still enjoy what I learn and share, and many of you have expressed what having this here as a regular thing has meant to you.

I think I've only gotten one of you to actually volunteer, and I hope a handful of you have found your local shelters and donated, but I feel that's personal so I don't expect to hear about that, but I do feel this group has been a positive experience for quite the number of you guys.

I'm glad you all seem to enjoy learning along with me about these animals, and I like being here to answer your questions and to surprise you with new things.

Late reply but

You don't owe us anything, when you need a break please take it, or slow down a bit. Mantaining a community is a massive task, I feel that there's enough of us invested now that we are not going to let it die. ( ͡~ ͜ʖ ͡°)

Also

This is awesome!! Thanks again anon, truly. <3

Finally, I want to be more involved in contributing to communities but I don't want to share whatever just fot the sake of it; so hopefully I can put together a nice post + write up from time to time :) you've inspired me as well.
