Book books? I don't go real hardcore, but I read some middlebrow stuff. I trend toward cerebral, edgy humor.

Tom Robbins, 'Skinny Legs and All' and 'Jitterbug Perfume'
John Irving, 'The World According to Garp' and 'A Prayer for Owen Meaney'
Norman Mailer, 'The Executioner's Song'
Richard Adams, 'Maia', then 'Shardik'
C D Payne, 'Youth in Revolt'
Anything by Kurt Vonnegut
Robert O'Connor, 'Buffalo Soldiers'
Jonathan Swift, 'Gulliver's Travels' (Seriously! It holds up!)
Cabriel Garcia Marquez, 'One Hundred Years of Solitude'
Joe Heller, 'Catch-22', although that one's funny enough it may not qualify as a 'vegetable book', which is what I call them. As in, "eat your vegetables, there are starving children in Africa".
Gore Vidal, 'Burr' and 'Lincoln'

Mine are all pretty mainstream. I hope I hit one you haven't yet read.

@NickEast_IndieWriter @bookstodon @scifi @speculativefictioncomedy @bookbubble @humour then let me suggest 2666 by Roberto Bolaño:

Two fotos of "2666", a novel by Robert Bolaño, front view an seen from the side. A real hunk of a book book.

„Blindsight” by Peter Watts
„Neptune’s Brood” by Charles Stross
„Ancillary Justice” by Ann Lecke

And maybe in a few years „New Dark Ages: Colony” by Max Kidruk.

@NickEast_IndieWriter @bookstodon @scifi @speculativefictioncomedy @bookbubble @humour Neal Stephenson's "Cryptonomicon" is 900 pages and I liked it a fair bit!

@NickEast_IndieWriter @bookstodon @scifi @speculativefictioncomedy @bookbubble @humour non-fiction but still one of the best page turned I encountered: The Power Broker, by Robert Caro. A 1,200 page behemoth.

How is it so that thick? I've read that in my youth, and I have distinct memory of it being closer to 300 pages than 1000.

@iju @NickEast_IndieWriter @bookstodon @scifi @speculativefictioncomedy @bookbubble @humour Oh no - it is huge. I am just reading it on my kindle, and it is 9 hours of reading time. A standard size book is 2-3 hours.

I mean, it is a very good read, in fairness. But it is long. And there are another 20+ books in the series, if you want to be a completist.....
