That sentence isn't actually from Hemingway. That's a common misattribution. See the Wikipedia article I linked. 😅

You're right, and reading the whole article raised another even sadder idea in my head: the "complete baby trousseau" being sold to pay for the funeral of the mother-to-never-be.
